The Social Capital platform was created in 2011 by Chamath Palihapitiya. In its first iteration, Social Capital raised traditional venture funds with investments in companies like Slack, Box, and Relativity Space. In 2018, the strategy transitioned to primarily a permanent capital model. Since then, two SPAC platforms – Social Capital Hedosophia and Social Capital Suvretta – have been launched to provide an alternative growth path for companies to go public, while continuing to make public and private investments, with a broad focus across climate science, life sciences, crypto/decentralized finance, and deep tech. Prior to creating the Social Capital platform, Chamath served as an early member of Facebook's senior executive team and led the development and launch of new platforms that drove the company's tremendous global growth. Prior to Facebook, Chamath held leading roles at The Mayfield Fund, AOL, and Winamp. Chamath was born in Sri Lanka, grew up in Canada, and graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo. Social Capital is not open to new investors.
