Zcash (ZEC) is a decentralized, privacy-focused Layer-1 cryptocurrency launched in 2016. It was originally based on Bitcoin’s codebase but introduced zero-knowledge cryptography to allow users to make transactions with stronger financial privacy. Zcash supports both transparent and shielded transaction functionality, with its modern shielded system centered around the Orchard protocol. Like Bitcoin, ZEC uses a proof-of-work monetary model with block rewards, periodic halvings, and a hard maximum supply of 21 million ZEC.
