Ethereum developer terence.eth tweeted that the official testnet for the Deneb/Cancun upgrade, called Devnet 8, has been launched and is progressing smoothly. Devnet 8 is the first dedicated testnet that includes all the finalized EIPs for the Cancun/Deneb upgrade.

Furthermore, the Holesky testnet is set to launch by the end of September this year, with 1.4 million validators, doubling the scale of the mainnet.

Cancun/Deneb is the next major upgrade for Ethereum and is expected later this year, including five Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) that designed to add more storage for data and reduce fees.

At the heart of this upgrade is EIP-4844, more commonly known as proto-danksharding. This feature will scale the blockchain by making more space for “blobs” of data, which then is expected to decrease gas fees for layer 2 rollups.

To provide clarity, the upgrade for the execution layer will be called Cancun. The consensus layer upgrade will be named Deneb — thus giving the combined upgrade its name, Cancun-Deneb.
