Meta Building Decentralized Social App to Compete with Twitter

According to Indian media outlet MoneyControl, Meta, the parent firm of Facebook and Instagram, is developing a decentralized social app for sharing text updates. The app is seen as an attempt to compete with Twitter.

The app, codenamed P92, supports decentralized social networking protocol ActivityPub. Users will be able to register and login to the app through their Instagram credentials. The project is lead by Instagram head Adam Mosseri.

Meta confirmed the report in a statement, which said,

"We're exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. We believe there's an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests."
