What is MetaMask
MetaMask is a mainstream software crypto wallet created by ConsenSys in 2016, which can be accessed through a browser extension or mobile app. It can be used to store and transfer cryptocurrencies and interact with blockchain networks and decentralized apps (DApps). The wallet supports any EVM-compatible networks, such as Ethereum, BNB Chain, Avalanche, Polygon, Fantom, Arbitrum, Harmony, xDAI, etc.
The main features of MetaMask are as follows, which are also the main features for most crypto wallets:
- Self-custody. Unlike a custodial wallet, MetaMask is managed by the user itself, and no institution can control the user's access to the wallet.
- Users can manage their wallets through passwords, private keys, and Secret Recovery Phrases (SRP). Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP) is a unique 12-word phrase that is generated when a user first set up MetaMask. Users' wallets are connected to that phrase. If someone ever loses the password, he/she can recover the wallet through SRP.
- The usage of MetaMask does not need any personal information.
- Users can create and manage multiple accounts with different addresses through one Secret Recovery Phrase.
