Who is Joseph Lubin
Joseph Lubin is one of the co-founders of Ethereum and the founder of ConsenSys, a leading Ethereum software company.
Early Life and Career
Born and raised in Toronto, Lubin graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He first worked in Robotics-related Labs developing autonomous music composition tools and mobile robots. Later, as a software engineer and consultant, Lubin worked on a few finance projects and was involved in the founding and operation of a hedge fund. He also held positions as Director of the New York office of Blacksmith Software Consulting and VP of Technology in Private Wealth Management at Goldman Sachs.
Entry into Cryptocurrency
Inspired by Satoshi Nakamoto’s Bitcoin white paper and the potential of distributed systems, Lubin piqued a strong interest in the blockchain field. He delved into the incipient blockchain community and co-founded Ethereum alongside fellow Torontonian Vitalik Buterin in 2014. He believed that "Bitcoin presented the broad strokes vision, while Ethereum presented the crystallization of how to deliver that vision." He was also involved in the creation of the Ethereum Foundation. After that, Lubin moved to build an ecosystem around Ethereum. He subsequently founded ConsenSys in 2014.
Founding and Leading ConsenSys
Founded in 2014 by Lubin, ConsenSys is a decentralized software company. It develops software mainly for the Ethereum blockchain. As one of the largest and most foundational entities in the blockchain technology space, ConsenSys is building blockchain-related developer tools, decentralized applications, and solutions for enterprises and governments, harnessing the power of Ethereum. It is the Ethereum community’s main developer and promoter of decentralized apps.
Under Lubin's leadership, ConsenSys has already incubated over 50 projects, including key infrastructural elements of the Ethereum network like Infura, MetaMask, Truffle, etc.
- Infura is a scalable backend infrastructure tool that supports Dapps on the Ethereum blockchain. The service makes it easy for users to connect their applications to the platform with simply one line of code. It is used a lot by developers, showing more than 10 billion code requests per day and it's been adopted by well-known Dapps such as MetaMask.
- MetaMask is a software cryptocurrency wallet used to interact with the Ethereum blockchain. It can be used to interact with decentralized applications. Notably, MetaMask uses Infura's node service to access blockchains. As of March 2022, MetaMask broke 30 million monthly active users, according to ConsenSys. To learn more about MetaMask? ConsenSys also incubates platforms and applications across a wide variety of industries, such as trade financing platforms and supply chain track and trace platforms. In addition, it also works on enterprise and government consulting, investment, and services like security auditing or token launching. You can find ConsenSys Ventures' portfolio here.
As a powerful advocate of decentralized technology, Lubin has also helped ConsenSys occupy the central position in the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance (EEA), a global standards organization for business applications of Ethereum technology. The EEA now has over 500 members, including global business leaders including Accenture, CME Group, Deloitte, JPMorgan, Microsoft, etc. ConsenSys serves as a bond connecting the traditional financial industry and the blockchain industry, contributing to the widespread application of blockchain technology.
